World Cup Youngsters
Performing well at what is probably the biggest stage in world sport is a must for every participating athlete, especially for the young players who wish to make their mark on football history. The necessity to perform well for youngsters could be a culmination of national pride infused with ambition, with both providing the same sense of assertiveness to the player.
Juventus wonder kid Paul Pogba scooped the 2013 award after a scintillating first season with his club, with some other impressive performances for France after having won the Under-20 World Cup. Isco, Real Madrid’s young sensation, had won the 2012 award following his outstanding season with Malaga and will also appear for Spain this summer.
Each World Cup gives us the chance to see these kinds of youngsters in action for their respective countries, whilst rare undiscovered gems could also be unearthed during this tournament. Chelsea owned Romelu Lukaku, currently on loan and thrilling fans at Everton, finished in second place and will also be present in Brazil to represent Belgium.
Schalke 04’s Julian Draxler has been on big clubs around Europe’s wish lists throughout this season, with a move to the English Premier League a high possibility. He may not be present in Brazil however, as Germany are experiencing a stage where talent in that particular position is abundant. Real Madrid defender Raphael Varane, brought into the limelight by Mourinho during his spell at the club, has a higher chance of appearing in this summer’s tournament for his nation France.
Other highly skilled youngsters will be hoping to wow fans and potential suitors this coming summer, including PSG’s Marquinhos for Brazil and Arsenal’s Oxlade Chamberlain for England. Previous Golden Boy winners have become highly influential players both on and off the pitch, with some being Lionel Messi, Mario Balotelli and Mario Gotze.
Even though all footballers will be going into the World Cup with the same drive, certain youngsters will feel that they have more to prove, as whether it’s for national pride, better suitors or an improved salary package from their current club, they will certainly make sure to impress.
