World Cup Goalkeepers (Part 2)
Being a goalkeeper adds that particular extra bit of pressure on a player, especially on the biggest stage in world football. The fact that the goalie is the only one in his position in the first eleven means that he’s more prone to errors and howlers, with some occasions in past World Cups proving such a point.
Nevertheless, along with risk comes pride, with the World Cup managing to get the best out of the world’s best keepers. In the second part of this article, we shall be looking at some of the best goalkeepers who will be between the sticks for their nation in Brazil.
JULIO CESAR
Although Cesar’s recent move from QPR to Toronto FC may have raised a few eyebrows, the goalkeeper’s reason for the move was quite simple; more playing time in order to secure his national spot. He is still considered the home team’s best option in between the posts, whilst when compared with other goalkeepers in the world, Cesar remains one of the best in his position.
HUGO LLORIS
The Frenchman was sought after by several high profile clubs in Europe before being snatched up by Tottenham Hotspurs. Having risen to fame during a number of incredible seasons with Lyon, this goalkeeper with lightning fast reflexes has saved club and country numerous times. Though France are not considered favourites, they’re still packed with talent all around and will hope that their world class goalkeeper will be at his best.
Other honourable mentions include England’s goalkeeper Joe Hart, who whilst being highly error-prone still possesses the qualities necessary to be one of the best. The Netherlands’ Marten Stekelenburg is another one worth watching as the goalkeeper has risen from the ashes following a disappointing spell at AS Roma. There also seems to be a headache on the way for Belgium head coach Marc Wilmots, as both Thibaut Courtois and Simon Mignolet are experiencing exceptional campaigns with their respective clubs Atletico Madrid and Liverpool.
Goalkeeping is one of the toughest positions on the field, so we will be hoping that the World’s best will really be at their best, especially should an intense match end up in penalties.
