Each week, we shall be looking into one of the greatest footballers in modern football and the impact they can potentially make when the World Cup commences in June.

Every nation has that football player who oozes class whilst demanding respect. The matter is made even more important when said player is highly influential to the whole squad and is also the team captain. Lastly, it’s imperative that the player is one who is looked up to due to his actions off the field as well. That player for the English national team is Steven Gerrard.

Now at the age of 33, the eminently talented Liverpool midfielder is enjoying an astounding season with his club, a season which could see him lift the Premier League trophy for the first time during his career. Always loyal to his club, Gerrard always claimed that he had one trophy he was yet to lift before retiring.

He was rightly described as one of the greatest English midfielders in history. The club and country captain is a player who tirelessly runs for 90 minutes whilst the vision and technique which could scar any opposition. His impeccable shooting prowess is also one to be feared, as Gerrard is also quite the prolific goalscorer for a midfielder.

Forget Rooney. Gerrard will be 34 years of age during this summer’s World Cup, equating to the chances of this being his last World Cup on full form. He will certainly want to make an impact for an England team considered as underdogs, yet any football player and fan worldwide would know that underestimating a squad which has Gerrard as their captain would be a grave and avoidable mistake.
