sonySports and technology have always found a way to walk hand in hand, with Sony announcing an exciting venture for the upcoming World Cup.

The multi-billion corporation have stated that this year’s World Cup in Brazil shall be the first ever football tournament shot in 4k resolution, albeit only testing out for 3 matches. The ones in question are (obviously) the final, one of the quarter-finals as well as one of the Round of 16 matches on the 28th of June.

The matches won’t be broadcast live though. Instead, highlights from said matches will be brought together and incorporated to produce a 4k resolution movie about the World Cup.

4k television, however, has yet to reach mass market appeal due to lack of content and pricing. Even 4k TV owners won’t have the privilege of watching the matches live in such high definition, as the shots shall solely be kept for the movie’s purposes. Sony display booths in Brazil will be available to offer glimpses of 4k resolution footage to football fans in the country during the tournament.

Sony have not commented yet on whether they shall be broadcasting live 4k screenings of any matches during the World Cup, however do stay tuned as we shall be updating you with any related (non pixellated) news.
