Each week, we shall be looking into one of the greatest footballers in modern football and the impact they can potentially make when the World Cup commences in June.

Widely regarded as one of the best full backs in sport’s history, Philipp Lahm is one of those rare footballers who has chosen loyalty over personal success. Little does the little man know that his loyalty, talent and leadership skills have in fact led him to enjoy tremendous individual success.

Lahm is Bavarian born and bred, opting to stick with his hometown club Bayern Munich throughout his career so far, breaking into the senior squad in 2002. Although he’s right-footed, the full back has been indomitable in both left and right positions. His small stature should not represent his skill, as the man nicknamed ‘The Magic Dwarf’ is renowned for his dribbling, pace as well as formidable tackling. After Mark Van Bommell’s departure in 2011, Lahm was appointed as club captain in what was another achievement in the player’s illustrious career.

The player’s captaincy skills don’t end there, as Lahm has also been the German national team’s captain since 2010. The full back has enjoyed plenty of national team success such as being included in the 2006 and 2010 World Cup team of the tournament as well as leading his team to third place in the 2006 and 2010 World Cups as well as the 2012 Euro.

Ever since Pep Guardiola’s arrival as Bayern Munich head coach, Lahm has seen his position shift into a defensive midfielder’s role after the manager dubbed him as the most intelligent footballer he has ever had the pleasure of training.

Watch out for Lahm and his Die Mannschaft counterparts this summer as they are tagged as one of the favourites and will surely bring viewing pleasure to any football fan.
